In the 1960's, a group of pioneering scientists hypothesized that lasers could be used to induce fusion in a laboratory setting. 

LLNL built a series of increasingly powerful laser systems, leading to the creation of NIF. It uses powerful laser beams to create conditions, like in the cores of stars.

LLNL's experiment in December 2022, delivered 2.05 megajoules of energy, that resulted in 3.54 megajoules of fusion energy output.
